Collateral Event – 11th International Architecture Exhibition - Out There: Architecture Beyond Building

An Italian garden in China
By Mario Occhiuto

Guest appearance by Mimmo Paladino

Opening September 12th, 6.30 pm

Since the year 2000, the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea has started a collaboration project with China, where sustainability, urban environment and its quality have a central role.

The 2008 edition of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia “Out There:
Architecture Beyond Building” (the Arsenale, September 14th- November 23rd) gives the opportunity to present one
of such projects:
an Italian garden in Tianjin.

The installation by the architect Mario Occhiuto in collaboration with Mimmo Palladino, exposed in the THETIS pavilions, will show the architectural and landscape project that the mOa office is carrying out in China: a garden to be built on a 6-hectar area in the Tianjin Municipality, about 100 km south-west of Beijing.

Tianjin is a city historically and culturally linked to Italy, being the seat of the only Italian concession in China during the first half of the last century.

Within this project, a new urban green area has been designed to recall, in a modern way and respecting the conservation of biodiversity, the characteristics of the ‘Italian gardens’, and to become the center of new settlement in Tianjin.

Mario Occhiuto, who has been designing sustainable projects for years and has already been working in China, has proposed a new concept of garden, aiming at going beyond the pure architecture of forms.

The large park is free from geometric rules, a wider botanical choice and the use of soft shapes along with a great landscape
variability
.

In this research process, the garden becomes a new version of the landscape design, where the attention for the environment is harmoniously linked to the project, space functionality and art.

Expression of the cultural contamination that goes on between Italy and China, the garden finds its formal unity and fluidity of the paths in the lines of Botticelli’s Venus and it will host the work of contemporary Italian artists to underline the educational intent of the project.

The installation is comprised of three environments: the first
will introduce the visitors to an introspective atmosphere,
in contrast with the outside; the second, and main environment, will show the project through impressions and visual suggestions;the third will show the history of the project, in a more didactic way.

Water and image will be the center of the installation. In the second environment, a large pool filled with water and crossed by a bridge will hold Mimmo Palladino’s and other artists’ (such as Maurizio Orrico and Giovanni Casellato) sculptures as they were floating.

On the walls, in the space created by eight large arc niches,
unpublished videos will be projected, which will illustrate the themes experimented in the project.

An Italian garden in Tianjin is part of the the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection between the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea and the MEP (Ministry of the Environmental Protection of China),by Corrado Clini, General Director for Environmental Research and Development.

Giovanni Casellato per “Un Giardino italiano in Cina”
11.Mostra Internazionale di Architettura – Out There: Architecture Beyond Building

“The cycle of life” is the subject of the project in the park and it is the result on my thinking upon a theme suitable for a playing area.

I thought it was very important to work on a simple, quick and
intuitive message to address to a young public.
In order to capture children’s interest and attention I knew I had to work on a simple and direct language through colourfull shapes.

My approach to the project has been intuitive, figurative and visually understandable …a butterfly!
I have created a rainbow of colours using Murano’s glasses on a structural iron shape which reflects its colours when the

light goes through.
