"Lebedik un Freilech", Vienna 2009.El klezmer (del yiddish כלזמיר, etimológicamente del hebreo k'li zemer כלי זמר, "instrumento musical") es la música de los judíos askenazíes de Europa Oriental. En el siglo XV, grupos seculares no litúrgicos desarrollaron este tipo de música y se les denominó klezmorim. Ellos se inspiraron en el antiguo testamento para crear melodías con temáticas de celebración y alegría.

Originalmente el término klezmer se refería a los instrumentos musicales con los que se interpretaba, sin embargo, más tarde se extendió tanto al género como a los músicos en sí mismo, que hoy son llamados klezmorim.

Estilo

El klezmer es fácilmente reconocible por sus características melodías expresivas, con reminiscencias de la voz humana, con la incorporación de risas, llantos y aullidos. El klezmer asume la propia tradición de la música jasídica y le incorpora sonidos, instrumentos y modos de interpretar de aquellos países en donde los judíos de la diáspora habitaban.

Historia

Los klezmorim eran respetados por sus habilidades musicales y a menudo eran solicitados por iglesias cristianas o ejercían de instructores para violinistas italianos. El primer músico que interpretó klezmer en un concierto europeo fue Josef Gusikov, el cual utilizaba un tipo de xilófono construido por él mismo, arrancando críticas muy positivas de Felix Mendelssohn.

Los Pogromos de finales de siglo XIX y comienzos del XX más la persecución y aniquilamiento de la cultura judía por parte del nazismo, hicieron que el klezmer fuera desapareciendo y en la década de 1950 fuese complicado encontrar jóvenes religiosos judíos que supieran qué era el klezmer; no obstante, desde la década de 1970 existe una revalorización y músicos de jazz no judíos comienzan a interpretar klezmer y a formar bandas, como John Zorn y Don Byron con su Klezmer Conservatory Band.
